Alternative honeymoon spots for cold-weather lovers

Honeymoons are a special time for newlyweds wanting to spend quality time together. These usually take the form of a safari or a paradise beach hut in the Maldives, but rarely in the snowy peaks of the Alps. One of Europe's leading ski tour operators, Sunweb, has compiled an alternative honeymoon list for those couples who enjoy thrill-seeking, snow carving and a proper fondue in the shadow of Mont Blanc.

Les Deux Alpes - Hotel Chalet Mounier

With 200km of slopes to glide down, Les Deux Alpes is France's second-oldest ski resort. The village sits at 1,650m, with lifts going up to 3,600m, meaning honeymooners can take on the largest skiable glacier in Europe.

On top of that, Hotel Chalet Mounier is a stylish, family-run hotel with an abundance of charm. After a full day of skiing, recover in the hotel's hammam and Jacuzzi before treating yourself to a Michelin-starred meal in the hotel's restaurant.

Monterosa, Champoluc - Au charmant Petit Lac Spa & Park Hotel

Set on the banks of a small lake, it's difficult to find a more romantic location than the Au charmant Petit Lac Spa & Park Hotel in Italy.

In the heart of the Aosta valley, this resort sits at the base of the second highest mountain in the alps and has 180km of skiable runs, making it a perfectly viable option for a honeymoon ski trip.

All rooms have a balcony and picturesque view of the mountains and the hotel is also half-board, meaning newlyweds can also treat themselves to a three-course dinner menu with a cuisine made up of traditional regional influences with a contemporary twist.

Saas Tal, Saas-Fee - Walliserhof Grand Hotel & Spa

Crossing into Switzerland, the luxurious Walliserhof Grand Hotel & Spa is located in the heart of picturesque Saas-Fee and is the perfect base for an unforgettable honeymoon.

With a world-class wellness centre, the hotel features a heated swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room, and a gym to recuperate after a full day of slope-carving.

A bright and modern living room

Les Trois Vallées

The world's largest ski area is made up of three different and equally magical resorts.

Méribel provides access to 600km of slopes without the hustle and bustle of Val Thorens and the non-skiing tourism traffic found in Courchevel.

Residence Premium L'Hévana is a chic apartment with modern and stylish fittings. It also includes free access to the complex's luxury spa, which houses an infrared cabin, a Turkish steam bath, and a heated indoor swimming pool so newlyweds can recharge after a long day on the slopes.

Les Trois Vallées

For high-end luxury, exclusivity and a bit of shopping, Courchevel is the resort of choice. Brimming with life, Courchevel is home to some stunning slopes and sumptuous stays, with Fahrenheit Seven Courchevel is literally on the piste and there's plenty of options nearby for a spot of après to celebrate a new marriage in style.

An indoor Jacuzzi

Les Trois Vallées

If it's more of a party atmosphere sought, the third resort in the 3 Vallées, Val Thorens, should be the destination of choice. With bars galore and a teeming nightlife, there's no better place in all of France to continue the party whilst on honeymoon.

Hotel Le Sherpa is a charming chalet-style hotel on the edge of town. With wooden beams lining the interior, it has a real alpine feel, a stunning view of the mountains and an excellent restaurant to match.
